Question 1

Dirt, soot or ash

Being that wood is a naturally porous surface, things like dirt, soot and ash can seep in damaging the wood.

How-To: Bleach Test

Hold a rag covered in bleach on an area that looks dirty; if the spots disappear that means you’re dealing with mold & mildew.

Tannin bleed

This is a very common problem with decks when moisture pulls the natural tannins of the wood to the surface.

How-To: Tannin Bleed Test

Apply a small amount of Cabot Wood Brightener to the surface; if it removes the tannin bleed, then treat the entire deck.

Rust stains

Blue-black or gray discoloration caused by a chemical reaction from metals such as screws, nails or other fasteners on the surface of your wood.
